Let’s Talk About That Credit Score You Don’t Want to Talk About

lets talk about that creidt score.png

If you’ve ever avoided checking your credit score like it was Leviticus in a Bible-in-a-Year plan… you’re not alone.

We’ve all made financial mistakes. Overspent. Missed a payment. Opened a store card we didn’t need just to get 15% off. Life happens. But here’s the good news: your credit score doesn’t have to stay broken.

In Uniform of the Steward, we explore how everything we have — our money, time, talents — is a trust, not a possession. That includes our credit history. Even when it’s messy, God invites us to manage it with purpose and integrity, not shame.

So let’s break the silence and get practical. Here are 6 faith-aligned steps to rebuild a poor credit score — and reclaim your financial witness.

🔧 1️⃣ Own What’s Broken — and Invite Grace In
Romans 8:1 reminds us: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Your credit history is not your identity. But it is part of your stewardship story. Start by checking your credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Print it. Highlight it. Pray over it. Then make a plan.

💳 2️⃣ Start Making On-Time Payments — Today
Payment history is the single biggest factor in your credit score. Even one missed payment can linger for years. But every on-time payment from here forward is a step toward rebuilding trust — with lenders and yourself.
Proverbs 13:11 says, “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” That applies to your payment habits, too.

📉 3️⃣ Settle Up on Past Due Accounts
Got late bills? Don’t hide from them — negotiate with them. Many creditors will work with you if you’re honest and proactive. Start with the smallest account to gain momentum.
Matthew 5:25 encourages reconciliation quickly. Apply that not just in relationships — but in your finances, too.

📊 4️⃣ Build New Credit — the Right Way
If your credit is damaged, you may need to re-establish your reputation. A secured credit card or credit-builder loan can help. Use it only for small purchases you can repay in full.
It’s not about borrowing more — it’s about proving you can be faithful in little (Luke 16:10).

🧼 5️⃣ Dispute Inaccuracies
Errors on your credit report are more common than you think. File disputes through the credit bureau websites. It’s boring, but important.
Proverbs 16:11 reminds us, “Honest scales and balances belong to the Lord.” Make sure your financial record reflects the truth.

🕰 6️⃣ Give It Time — But Don’t Waste Time
Rebuilding takes 12–24 months, sometimes longer. But every month counts. You’re not just fixing a number — you’re developing discipline, consistency, and character.

Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
So keep going. God doesn’t waste anything — not even a bad credit score.

🌱 Remember: Your credit history is a snapshot, not your whole story.
A poor credit score doesn’t disqualify you from being a faithful steward. In fact, the way you respond to it can become one of the most powerful testimonies of growth, responsibility, and trust in God’s provision.

You don’t need perfect credit to walk in purpose — but you do need intentional stewardship.
